Starting a Program
Girls on the Run selects new program sites each year. If Girls on the Run is not in a school in the Austin area, we can help you bring GOTR your way. See below to learn what we need from a school or organization in order for it to be approved as a host site.
Checklist to Host the Program
If you would like to help bring Girls on the Run to a school or organization in Austin, please let us know! There is a lot required to make this happen, and we could use your help…
While Girls on the Run International provides almost everything needed to run the program, the site is required to provide the following:
- Provide a Site Liaison, a primary contact person for coordinating the site.
- Provide a safe, dedicated space for running two days per week for 1 ½ hours. THIS IS ESSENTIAL. This does not have to be a track. A field is fine. However, there is a need to measure off part of the area when the girls will be running a certain distance (e.g., 400m, 1 mile, 5K, etc.).
- Provide a rain site. Indoor, private, preferably a gym reserved for GOTR and NOT in conflict with other programs.
- Secure storage area for shoes, snacks, etc.
- Determine plan for identifying participants. In order for the lessons to be effective, there must be a minimum of 8 girls per team. Registration forms are available for you to distribute to generate interest.
- Provide two coaching candidates per team for your site. Each coach will be required to attend approximately 5 hours of Girls on the Run® training and complete a satisfactory background check. Coaches must also become First Aid and CPR certified. Coaches must be available two afternoons per week during the program. Girls on the Run will assist you in identifying coaches when necessary.
- Verify support from the school principal or site director. If the school requires a new program to be registered through a community education or after school program process, please provide the contact information and all forms required to register the program.
If you are interested in bringing GOTR to a specific location in Austin please contact Carlena Harris.
